『湖水地方案内』―ワーズワスと英国湖水地方における観光と環境保護運動
Guide to the Lakes—Wordsworth, tourism and conservation movements in the English Lake District
英国湖水地方における観光文化と景観保護運動に対してロマン主義詩人ウィリアム・ワーズワスが果たした役割について考察する。ワーズワスの書いた『湖水地方案内』および鉄道敷設に反対する公開書簡の精読を通して、人と自然とのあるべき関係性、旅行者の取るべき態度、景観保護の必要性についての詩人の考え方を理解する。湖水地方観光、景観保護運動といった文化的・社会的背景のなかでワーズワスがどのように受容されてきたのか、またその言説は現代の自然観、環境意識、持続可能な観光という考え方にどの程度影響を与えているかを批判的に検証し、考察し、自分の言葉で表現できることを目指す。
This course will consider how William Wordsworth has influenced tourism and the conservation movements in the English Lake District. Through a careful reading of his Guide to the Lakes and open letters opposing the railway, we aim to understand his ideas about man’s relationship with nature, the attitude to be taken by the traveller, and the need to protect the landscape. Students are encouraged to critically analyse, consider, and express our opinions on how Wordsworth has been received in the cultural and social context of tourism and conservation movements in the Lake District, and how his writing is influential to modern views of nature, environment, and sustainable tourism.
