The term diaspora is used to describe people who have left their countries of origin, either by force or voluntarily and subsequently constitute a group in a new country of settlement where they are defined primarily in relation to the original 'home country. This course will compare diasporas that are mainly the result of labour migrations to analyse a range of issues related to culture, race, politics and citizenship. At the end of the course students will be familiar with conceptual issues in relation to diasporas and have in-depth knowledge about diasporas in relation to a range of countries.
