Comparative Diasporas
The term diaspora is used to describe people who have left their countries of origin, either by force or voluntarily, and who subsequently constitute a group in a new country of settlement where they are defined primarily in relation to the original 'home' country. This course will compare diasporas that are mainly the result of labour migrations to analyze a range of issues related to culture, race, politics and citizenship. Diasporas that are the result of forced migration will also be considered. At the end of the course students will be familiar with conceptual issues in relation to diasporas and will have in-depth knowledge about diasporas in relation to a range of countries.
