Foundations of Environmental Sciences II
Law and Sustainability in Global Industrial Companies
This course is a collaboration between Uppsala University (UU) in Sweden and the University of Tokyo (UTokyo). The UU students are from the Master Programme in Industrial Management and Innovation with a special interest in issues related to business and technology. The UTokyo students are latter year undergraduate students in Environmental Sciences.
This course aims to explore methods of sustainable management and governance within global enterprises, premised on the interdependence between “Sustainability Management” and “Environmental Law and Ethics”. It primarily consists of interactive lectures and compulsory seminars (joint videoconference seminar series with UU students / Virtual Exchange), with UTokyo and Uppsala U. students presenting case reports. Assessment is based on case study reports, active participation in seminars, and one individual written assignment (essay).

授業計画
The schedule will be confirmed at the beginning of the course. In general, there will be 2 sessions each week - a planning session (on Fridays) and then a presentation session (on Thursdays). The latter will take place with live videoconferencing between students in Uppsala University in Sweden and UTokyo students.

* Short interactive lectures (in person)
* Flipped classroom sessions (video-recorded short lectures)
* Case studies: Through three different case studies of companies across diverse industries (ICT, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and an industry selected by students), you will examine sustainable management and governance, focusing on global warming, pollution, waste, and resource depletion. Building on insights from case studies, you will evaluate whether the target companies contribute to global sustainability. This will involve discussions using legal concepts ranging from environmental law to Earth systems law, alongside practical and theoretical frameworks concerning ethics.
成績評価方法
Several things will determine your grade:
(1) attendance on seminars,
(2) individual written exam/assignment,
(3) participation and performance in group work,
(4) case presenter, and
(5) case discussant.

For organisational and administrative reasons with the partner university in Uppsala, the number of places for UTokyo students is limited to 15. Students wishing to take this course must officially register at the beginning of the first term.
