History of Transnational Markets and Civil Society I

Museum, Collections, and Provenance
This course will focus on the dynamics of museum collections in contemporary society. Particular attention will be paid to the meaning and politics of provenance--where the items on display come from and the socio-political-economic background behind that origin. The instructor's specialty is US cultural studies but the class will spend a considerable amount of time talking about museums in Japan. The class combines readings with exploring visits to actual sites.

授業計画
We will be reading academic articles to gain a theoretical understanding of museum provenance and also to discuss concrete issues. The class is discussion-based and active participation is required in every class session. The first day of class is April 9 (online).
授業の方法
Students are expected to do all the readings and come prepared to engage in discussions every week. (This is not an appropriate class for those whose preference is to listen to lectures.) Students are asked to visit museums during the semester to contextualize the theoretical readings we do in class in actual practice.
成績評価方法
Attendance, participation, a small project and a final paper. Details will be give on the first day of class.
教科書
For the first session, be sure to read: Victoria S. Reed, "American Museums and Colonial-Era Provenance: A Proposal" International Journal of Cultural Property (2023), 30: 1–21. doi:10.1017/S0940739123000036 A detailed syllabus will be provided on the first day. All the reading materials, including above, will be available electronically through our library system.

履修上の注意
Before deciding to take the course, read the following article and make sure this kind of topic interests you: Victoria S. Reed, "American Museums and Colonial-Era Provenance: A Proposal" International Journal of Cultural Property (2023), 30: 1–21. doi:10.1017/S*****000036 This will be an online class. The first day of class is orientation and will take place on April 9 at 1300. Note that there will be a number of weeks when there will be no classes, and you will be asked to visit museums on your own. To make up for the lack of sessions, there will be in-person sessions held at the end of the semester (the date will be discussed in class). For museum visits, the students are expected to go in groups and bear the cost of transportation and admission fees. Although the class content is similar to the previous year's, students who wish to repeat the class may do so, provided they will be going to different museums on their own.
その他
Those who completed this course last year are welcome to join, as the reading materials and discussion topics will be different.
