This course will read two classic books in the field: Gregory M. Pflugfelder, 1999. Cartographies of Desire: Male-Male Sexuality in Japanese discourses 1600-1950, Berkley: University of California Press and Sabine Frühstück, 2003, Colonizing Sex: Sexology and Social Control in Modern Japan, Berkley: University of California Press.
授業の方法
The course will be based on participants presenting to the class a summary of each chapter and then discussion with the class. Students will be expected to present at least two presentations (one on each book) on the chapter (chapter summary and class discussion questions) in the semester.
成績評価方法
Participants have to present two presentations as well as submitting a semester end paper (4000-5000 words; you can choose your own topic but you have to refer to the books or base it on class discussions).
Presentations: 40% (20% each)
A semester end paper: 60%
