Japanese Cinema in the Sixties
Throughout this semester, we will examine the main aesthetic, epistemological, and—though to a lesser extent—industrial issues that shape Japanese cinema of the 1960s. The hypotheses put forward here are based primarily on close analysis of the films, considered in relation to their context. We will move from avant-garde films to more conventional ones, from peripheral works to those regarded as central to the period. The filmmakers studied will include Hani Susumu, Ichikawa Kon, Matsumoto Toshio, Teshigahara Hiroshi, Yoshida Kijû, Oshima Nagisa, Imamura Shohei, among others.

授業の方法
The class is based upon close analysis of film sequences.
成績評価方法
Presentation and participation during class.
Students will have to make a presentation on the filmmaker they would like to discuss, and participate actively to a Q&A session after the presentation of others.
Note: While the course is open to students from all academic backgrounds, it is not an introductory course. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with film analysis if they have not already done so. Their work will be assessed based on their ability to conduct analyses and develop research questions that fully align with the field of film and media studies.
