Concrete contents and texts, as well as the languages spoken in class, will be chosen based on the participants’ proficiency in English and/or German, their existing knowledge of the field and their interests. The schedule is meant to be flexible and can be further adapted later in the semester to reflect these factors.
Possible topics include: the problem of “rule-following”; the relation between language, thought, and world; the role of language in society, culture; intercultural differences; the problem of “relevance” in context; the relation between words and non-verbal signs.
The choice of texts will focus on authors writing in German without excluding others. Possible German authors include Wilhelm von Humboldt, Gottlob Frege, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Karl Bühler, or Alfred Schütz. Examples of other authors are Aristotle, John Austin, Donald Davidson, Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, and Umberto Eco.
