Language contact and Creole theory: Theory and description
The course investigates the role of language contact - the interactions between people speaking different languages across a significant period of time - in language change. Language change accounts for the diversification of languages over time, and language contact is one of the mechanisms known to drive it. We will study in particular the dynamics of what gives rise to new languages, especially pidgins and Creoles, with a focus on Asian contexts. This involves understanding the nature of multilingual acquisition and theories of creolization, as well as the relationship between language and identity.
