言語態基礎論IV

Questions Concerning Technology
This course aims to challenge prevalent assumptions surrounding technology. Central questions will likely include: Does technology enable or undermine democratic life? Does it stand opposed to nature? Does technological advancement expand human freedom, or does it intensify demands on time and labor? Does it threaten art, or generate new conditions of possibility? Drawing on foundational and contemporary work in critical theory and philosophy, this seminar introduces students to critical frameworks for analyzing technology's complex and often contradictory role in shaping social life. Students will develop the theoretical vocabulary and analytical tools necessary to critically interrogate widely held assumptions about technology's neutrality, inevitability, and relationship to human flourishing.

授業の方法
Texts explored in the class are located in or draw heavily from the traditions of continental philosophy and critical theory. Such texts are notoriously demanding. Each class session will center upon exegetical practices, using discussion centered around practices of close reading to arrive at fuller understandings of the texts and their claims. As a graduate seminar, participants in the course will also be asked to take on greater responsibility, including taking turns leading close-reading exercises. A comprehensive final examination, conducted at the end of the semester, will evaluate students’ understanding of key concepts and ideas introduced through the readings.
成績評価方法
Active and consistent participation in class discussions, including taking the lead in several close-reading activities (60%); and a final comprehensive examination (40%) to be given at the end of the semester.
履修上の注意
Graduate seminars similar to this one tend to be very small in number—usually 2 or 3 participants. This means that the seminar requires each member to be present, fully prepared for each class, and ready to actively participate in all class discussions. It will not be possible to assume a passive attitude or a position of silent observation if the course is to succeed.
