言語態分析I

On Comedy
In this class, we will read representative comedies from ancient Greece to modern Europe, considering the following questions:

1. Are there any common traits shared by ancient and modern comedies? Can we define the essential features of comic drama, as Aristotle did for tragedy in the Poetics?

2. If not, how can we recognise certain dramatic works as comedies across different historical periods? If the designation of a work as comedy depends largely on our intuitive sense of what comedy is, is it impossible to define the genre?

3. Does comedy as a genre belong to particular types of social or political order (civil society, systems of patronage, the nation-state, etc.)? If so, can we identify, or even imagine, the end or death of comedy?
