中英語で読む『星の王子さま』
Reading a Middle English version of _Le Petit Prince_
「英語の科学的研究をするのにもっとも基本的な準備は古代英語及び中世英語の初歩的知識を得ることである。」(市河三喜)
'The most basic preparation for a scientific study of English is to gain rudimentary knowledge of Old English and Middle English.' (Sanki Ichikawa)
This course introduces students to Middle English, the English language between c.1100 and c.1500 and the language used by Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1340-1400), among others. The conventional teaching method in Japanese and overseas universities is reading original texts in scholarly editions. This can be frightening to students who are completely new to Middle English, and they may even find medieval society too remote. Notable attempts in recent years to increase the accessibility of Old English (c.600-c.1100) and Middle English, especially in less formal contexts, are carried out via translations into these language stages of popular modern books (e.g. _Alice in Wonderland_) and songs (e.g. 'Let It Go'). We will follow this alternative that is not recognised much in Japan. Specifically, we will read a Middle English translation, by a modern scholar, of _Le Petit Prince_ or _The Little Prince_.
This French masterpiece by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry has been translated into more than 600 languages, and its value as an introduction to linguistics is demonstrated in _'Le Petit Prince' in 28 Languages_ (edited by Shinjiro Kazama and Reo Yamada, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Press, 2021). The Middle English translation by Walter Sauer (an eminent academic of Middle English) follows Chaucer's English, which is most likely dealt with in courses of Middle English literature and is relatively easy to navigate with sufficient competence in Present-day English alone. The pedagogical benefit of the Middle English (and Old English) version of _Le Petit Prince_ has been acknowledged abroad.
We will study various linguistic features of Middle English, e.g. spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, as well as differences from Present-day English by reading the whole of the Middle English version of _Le Petit Prince_ and consider how and why the English language has changed. Through an adventure of learning an old language in an unconventional way, students will certainly have a new perspective even if they have read _Le Petit Prince_ in different versions and know the plot. The translation, while not 'authentic' Middle English, presents us with an intriguing question: How should we express modern words and concepts that lack adequate equivalents in the Middle Ages, like 'plane' (both the word and the vehicle)? We will try an excerpt from the Old English translation after finishing the Middle English one.
