国際研修&後期国際研修グローバルヘルス入門/ Introduction to Global Health (Part 1)
この授業は、SDGs(持続可能な開発目標)のGoal3「すべての人に健康と福祉を」が目指す世界の実現とグローバルヘルス課題にこれから世界を担う世代はどのように取り組んでいくべきなのか、分野や国境を超えて、市民社会、学生、研究者や行政が一体となってどのように取り組んでいるのかについて学ぶ。授業では、文献を読んだ上で、グローバルヘルスの第一線で活躍する内外部の講師や、開発協力の実務者、現場の医療従事者、途上国の行政管理者、研究者、国際機関や国際金融機関のアクターによるディスカッション形式の講義に参加することを通じて、学びを深めることを目指す。
This course introduces the principles and real-world practices of major global health challenges and it involves discussions/debates on current challenges we face and controversies in improving global population health. It equips students with fundamental knowledge and practical application of analytical methods to interpret global health issues and challenges.

Through this course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand global health as being shaped by the interaction of people, processes, power, politics, institutions and conditions at local, regional, national and global level,
2. Analyze epidemiological, economic, political, ethical, historical, environmental, social and organizational underpinnings of global health and disease patterns within national and international settings and how determinants of health affect the consequences of these patterns at global, societal and community levels,
3. Describe basic policy and people-centered health systems functions and governance of health care provision and public health systems at all levels, and
4. Examine the effect and methods of ranges of evidence-based community, local, national, international, global approaches and interventions that address global health problems.

Course schedule: Class 1:Introduction and Orientation: Political Economy of Global Health: Overview (introduction, conceptual underpinnings and historical foundations) Class 2-6:Dialogue with practitioners and group discussion (topics listed below) *Global burden of disease (including the epidemiological transition and non-communicable disease) *Health Inequity and social determinants of health *Adolescent health and mental health issues *Health economics and the politics of health financing *Introduction to health system strengthening and quality of care *Population aging and its implications to health systems Class 7-8: Field work (learning people-centered health system models in Japan (in Nagano or Iwate, location to be decided) Class 9-10:Lecture, dialogue with practitioners and group discussion *Health and Nutrition in emergencies/ under crises *Technology in advancing Health and Role of Digital Health, mHealth and innovations *Health impact of global climate change Class 11-12: Case Study Project (Group work) Class 13:The Final Presentation Collaborating Institutions and Academia Department of Community and Global Health, The University of Tokyo, Japan Guests/Participating Panelists: Nagasaki University Department of Global Health University of London, LSHTM Department of Global Health UN agencies (UNICEF, UNRWAR, UNHCR) and World Bank (US, Middle East, Africa, South Asia etc..) 授業の方法
授業は全て英語で行う。受講者は事前に課題文献を読みその内容を理解し、授業での議論に備えること。授業は双方向に行い、講義、事例に基づくグループディスカッション・議論から成る。特に、現代のグローバルヘルス上のテーマに関する解決策の分析、残された課題の解釈と提言を行うことを重視する。 This course will be conducted in English. Students are expected to read the assignment papers prior to each lecture and understand contexts and contents of the topic, case study stories provided, prepare for discussions in class. Classes will be highly interactive and participatory and will apply active learning methods. Each week will focus on a thematic issue and students will be introduced to the topic, analyze the issue in detail, understand different perspectives (of different actors/stakeholders) and review interventions and its effectiveness. This course will be provided in a Hyflex class (students who can attend face to face will attend face-to-face, and those who are physically not in Japan or due to health or other reason can not attend face-to-face are permitted to attend online) and is open for students in Japan and abroad.
成績評価方法
Weekly chapter readings, chapter questions, & other homework assignments (10%) Class participation (40%) Final project (50%) The final project will be the case study. Students will be divided into several groups working on different case study projects solving real-life global health problems presented in each case. Majority of students will be evaluated either Pass or Fail. But those who are registering this course as GS requirement will be applied for five levels evaluation. See below: A.「GS生で、科目履修もGS科目として履修する人」 → 「優上・優・良・可・不可」 B. 「GS生ではあるが、国際研修科目として履修する人」 → 「合否」で C. 「GSに登録していないがGS科目として履修しようとする人」→ 「優上・優・良・可・不可」
履修上の注意
・履修に際して医学、看護、保健、公衆衛生を専攻しない学生・留学生も広く歓迎します。 ・この授業は、NGO、JICAボランティア、国連JPOなどを通じて、開発途上国で働くことに興味のある学生、グローバルヘルス分野だけでなく、貧困、教育、ジェンダー、権利保護、難民問題、開発と環境など広い意味での地球規模の課題に関心のある学生を対象としています。 ・履修希望者が多数の場合は選考を行い、履修者を30名程度にします。初回ガイダンスで選考方法を伝えますので、履修希望者はガイダンスに参加してください。 ・No knowledge on SDGs is required. We welcome those students without any background (or intention to study) medicine, nursing, health sciences. ・We welcome students (from various departments, USTEP) interested in global issues in general (and not specific to health topics alone) such as human rights protection, social justice, development economics, international politics, development cooperation etc.. ・It would be a good entry course for those who are interested in working in developed/developing countries with the embassies, UN agencies, JICA etc.. ・If a large number of applicants registered, we will have a selection process and limit the number to about 30. We will inform students at the guidance. Please make sure to participate in the guidance.
実務経験と授業科目の関連性
Course coordinator holds a Doctorate of Public Health in Public Health Policy from the University of London (LSHTM), UK and Master of Public Health degree from the Boston University, USA. As a Health Specialist, Manager and Chief of Health in UNICEF and in other agencies, she has 20+ years of experience in generating research evidence to influence health systems and policy reforms and implementing health interventions throughout Asia, Middle East, and Africa.
