Experiencing Quantum Physics Through Everyday Materials
This course introduces the fundamental ideas of quantum physics by exploring quantum-driven properties in everyday materials and examining how these properties underpin modern technologies. Rather than focusing on mathematical formalism, the course emphasizes developing intuitive physical understanding, gaining hands-on experience in research-like settings, and engaging in team-based projects and discussions. By the end of the course, students will discover that quantum physics is not an abstract theory, but a powerful lens for understanding the world around us and for creating transformative technologies.
Learning Goals
- Understand key quantum concepts such as wave–particle duality, quantized energy levels, electronic band structures, spin, many-body entanglement, and topology through familiar materials and technologies.
- Explore the potential of new quantum materials and technologies to transform future industry and everyday life.
- Gain practical skills by engaging in laboratory-based activities and analyzing real research data.
- Develop scientific communication skills for international settings through collaborative activities, English presentations, and writing assignments.
