"Experience the research frontier in the field of energy using a chemical system engineering approach."
Specifically, we will focus on "lithium-ion batteries (LIB)" and "water electrolysis," and learn what kind of devices and technologies they are, and how they contribute to solving energy problems.
Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are rechargeable batteries used in smartphones and laptop PCs. Recently, they have been increasingly adopted for electric vehicles and power storage applications, and there is a demand to further increase the energy density. In this seminar, we will fabricate LIBs using various electrodes, including new materials that have not yet been put to practical use, and evaluate differences in their charge-discharge properties. By doing so, students will learn about the structure and reaction mechanism of LIBs and the issues that need to be addressed to further improve their performance.
On the other hand, electrocatalytic reaction is a process that directly converts electrical energy into chemical energy. Using electrocatalysts, hydrogen can be produced from water, for example, using electricity derived from renewable energy as the driving force. In this seminar, we will focus on the hydrogen production reaction, which is an cathodic reaction in the water electrolysis process, by actually preparing various electrocatalysts and evaluating their performance as electrodes. Through this experience, students will deepen their understanding of the electrode reaction and its reaction mechanism, and learn about the issues involved in this process.
