Capitalism and Desire
This course will consider the relationship between capitalist economic systems and human desire. It will examine how contemporary capitalist societies produce particular kinds of wanting, needing, and imagining that sustain these systems and shape the inner lives of those living in them. Students will engage with major theorists to develop a critical understanding of some of the ways that contemporary capitalism structures desire and restricts our sense of the possible.

授業の方法
Each class we will focus on an excerpted text from a major thinker. Students will be given time to read and annotate the text and discuss it in small groups. We will then review the group discussions as a class. At the end of the period, students will compose and submit a short, handwritten response centered on the text and the discussion surrounding it. This class will be conducted in a limited-technology environment. Students will be allowed to use electronic dictionaries, but connected devices such as laptops, tablets, and mobiles will not be permitted. Please bring loose-leaf paper or a notebook and a pen or pencil, beginning with the first class.
成績評価方法
Grades will be based on a combination of (1) contribution to group and class discussion (30%); (2) written responses on the reading composed at the end of each class (40%); and (3) a final in-class essay (30%).
履修上の注意
In order to complete the in-class writing assignments and final in-class essay, students will need to have loose-leaf paper or a notebook that they do not mind regularly submitting or removing pages from. Please bring the notebook or loose-leaf paper and a pen or pencil with you to every class, including the first one. In addition, since the use of connected devices is prohibited, students may want to purchase an electronic dictionary if they do not already own one.
