Notes:
Previous experience reading literature is not required to take this class. It is introductory level.
Because this class is focused on Gothic literature, it contains some material that may be upsetting, such as ghosts, death, and crime. Students who are sensitive or dislike such topics should not sign up for this course.
Policies on participation:
Students are expected to come to class on time (via Zoom) and complete assignments on time (via UTOL and Google Sites). In this course, students are graded on their active class participation (not attendance). If students have some trouble, either with technology or in their lives, they should contact the professor as soon as possible to help avoid negative impacts to their grades.
Policies on absences:
Students should report an absence for reasons of illness or technical difficulties and will receive an "excused" at the discretion of the professor (students should be prepared to offer some proof, such as a medical certificate or picture of the computer problem). However, students who miss more than 3 classes "unexcused" may not have sufficient points to pass the class. Moreover, missing 5 or more classes total, excused or unexcused, will result in failure of the course. Exceptions to these rules will be given on a case by case basis for diagnosed conditions and special cases adjudicated by the Kyomuka.
Policies on language use:
The language of instruction will be primarily English. But some discussion in Japanese will be allowed. Students should be prepared to read or write their assignments each week. Reports and other assignments should be completed in the student's original English.
Policies regarding reports and classwork:
Students who do not complete their final report cannot pass this class. Students who use generative AI, AI chatbots, AI translation tools. and/or AI grammar modifying/polishing tools to complete their classwork or reports will fail that assignment, which may result in failure of the course. Students who copy-paste, commit plagiarism, or commit acts of academic dishonest such as having another person edit their work, will face penalties including failure of the assignment and failure of the course. All students wishing to turn in a late assignment must contact the professor BEFORE the deadline has passed, except in extreme cases of emergencies that made such contact impossible (proof will be required). Late assignments that have been excused (for illness, disabilities, or technical problems) will be graded the same as on-time assignments. Late and unexcused assignments may be submitted for a passing grade. Unexcused lateness may result in assignments receiving no credit after 3 weeks have passed from the deadline; unexcused and late final reports may not be graded if the deadline for final grades has passed. Students who turn in the wrong assignment for their final report will receive a zero unless they send the correct version before the final grade deadlines. Students who turn in their report late without notifying the professor may fail the assignment (if it is a final report, they may fail the course this way).
