Multi-variable calculus
After augmenting some materials on integration of single variable functions, we continue to study calculus for multivariable functions. In particular, we will extend many of the basic concepts we learned so far to functions of two or more variables. Although many of the ideas that we developed for single variable functions will carry over naturally, there exist intrinsic differences between single and multivariable functions. So sometimes we need new tools and new ideas. In this course we introduce partial derivatives, multiple integrals, and their applications. If time permits, we will also introduce some concepts in vector calculus.

Following materials on integration of single variable functions, the following items will be covered: 1 partial derivatives 2 tangent plane and chain rule 3 Taylor's theorem and extreme values 4 implicit function theorem 5 double integral and integration methods 6 change of variables in double integrals 7 improper integral 8 some concepts in vector calculus (if time permits)

Blackboard lectures (except for the first week when the lecture will be given over Zoom). Each class extends for 105 minutes.

Final exam, plus some auxiliary tests given during lectures.

Mathematics I ②, described on this page, is the second portion of the Calculus course provided for PEAK. Students are assumed to have acquired familiarity with the materials taught in Mathematics I ①in 2023 A semester.
