英語中級(クラス指定セメスター型)

Why is English like that?

Why is English vocabulary so varied? Why is _went_ the past tense of _go_? (And _was_ the past of _am_ and _is_?) Why am I hearing so many high rising tones on statements these days? Why is English spelling so irregular? Will text messaging harm learners’ English?

These are only a selection of questions asked by learners and teachers of English from around the world. You may not think deeply about these questions when you study English as a (compulsory) subject at school level. However, once you obtain academic answers to these questions, you will be able to study English with more confidence and tackle other foreign languages more systematically.

We will read the whole of _David Crystal's 50 Questions about English Usage_ and contemplate on questions like the above, thereby aiming to improve our understanding of the English language. Students will also get good practice in actually using English by discussing and presenting about various related topics in English.
