英語中級(クラス指定セメスター型)

English Lectures on General Physics
This course will provide lectures on a series of Physics topics selected to ensure a balance between presentation of basic concepts and terminology, diagrams and formulas as well as proper reasoning about the underlying principles and mechanisms, using adequate English language. Although mainly intended for students interested to major in sciences, effort is made to select stand-alone content, presented so that it could be accessible to those specializing in other areas as well.

The main objective is to present students with practical, stimulating opportunities to experience English as a vehicular language (lingua franca) that future graduates will use for integrating into a multidisciplinary society and contributing to its technological advancement. Students will be challenged on two fronts: (i) comprehension of the studied Physics topics and (ii) mastering the use of appropriate English language to describe them from various scientifically-valid perspectives, analyze problems, provide solutions and envision applications.

授業計画
Each lesson will cover Physics topics that will be presented in a stand-alone manner, prominently using qualitative descriptions, so that they are accessible to students even without requiring in-depth prior knowledge or advanced mathematics. A discussion of textbook fundamentals will be combined with practical exercises or interactive computer simulations that will illustrate the studied physical concepts and phenomena. Students will be asked to engage in discussions and debate with the instructor and in groups, so that the Physics concepts and terminology are grasped, interpretations are understood and English language adequate for the purpose is acquired and practiced. All lectures will be delivered according to the University of Tokyo policy in place at the time (currently considered to be face-to-face).
授業の方法
Lecture by instructor, individual and group work on exercises and computer simulations of Physics concepts and principles. Taught in English, though students might use dictionaries and get help from classmates or instructor in clarifying the meaning of some specialized terminology, by using Japanese. Homework and reports are to be written in English. In order to carry out some of the homework assignments or supplementary lecture activities, access to a computer (or a mobile device like a tablet) will be needed in order to run some physics experiment simulation files or watch on-demand video.
成績評価方法
Participation in interactive activities with instructor and classmates: 30% Individual Assignments: 70% W While emphasis in evaluation will not be on the mastering of the Physics content itself, highest grades will require a good performance with respect to both (i) and (ii) objectives.
履修上の注意
Students should decide as soon as possible if they want to take the class in order to ensure smooth progression of class activities.
