Cultures of Adventure, Exploration, and Travel in Modern Japan
Setting our sights on the textual, visual, and historical horizons, this course will embark on a quest to explore the culture of adventure, exploration, and travel in modern Japan. Often considered a galvanizing force in the culture of empire, we will chart the course of the spirit of adventure and its emergence in congruence with the advent of science, exploration, and the age of imperial expansion. In this course, we will approach the genre of adventure through the lens of different cultural trends and sociopolitical issues and in the context of Japanese history. Throughout the course, we will engage with translated short-stories, essays, visual media, manga, and film that are expressly classified as ‘adventure’ – or contain elements of adventure involving encounters (sometimes dangerous) with the unknown and the exotic.

While we will be reading Japanese literature in translation, students are also free to engage with the original Japanese and incorporate the issue of translation into our class discussions. The course is designed to develop critical thinking, reading skills, and discussion, so students will be asked to prepare by reading the assigned texts in advance and play an active role in class discussion.
