Empirical Microeconomics
In this course, we will study econometric tools that are widely used across many areas of the social sciences and policy world to answer policy-relevant causal questions using observational data. We will discuss different micro econometric estimation techniques and read a paper that implements each technique. There will usually be a supplementary reading in addition to the main empirical paper. This is to introduce some issue or perspective on the practice of empirical work in the social sciences. You are expected to do all the assigned reading before class. The idea will be to understand both theory and application. We will cover regression, experiments, instrumental variables, machine learning, difference-in-differences, regression discontinuity designs, discrete choice models, dynamic discrete choice models, twins, and “predictions from theory” empirical work. Hopefully a byproduct of the course will be research ideas for students. I've had several students write very nice masters theses after taking this course (no claim of causality). There are no prerequisites for the course but the material is at the level of a masters course. Advanced economics undergraduate students are welcome to attend.
