Technology and New Markets

Technology and New Market
This course is (mainly) for doctoral students who are well-grounded in microeconomics, market design, game theory, and statistics and are interested in pursuing research in areas with a heavy emphasis on understanding and using theory.

Technology development always creates new markets. In particular, the recent development of information technology has created a number of useful services and markets, such as cryptocurrency, smart contract, ride-sharing, crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, data intermediary, recommender system, etc. These markets have very different structures from the traditional markets which traditional economics studies in the last century. This course aims to study the structure of new markets and make a policy suggestion for a new market design or desirable regulation.

履修上の注意
Market/mechanism design theory will be a basic tool for this course. Basic knowledge in microeconomics and game theory is required. Ideally, students should be familiar with topics and concepts covered in the first-year graduate courses of economics. Advanced knowledge of market/mechanism design theory and game theory will be useful but not required. In particular, I welcome students who mainly work on empirics.
