Non-Western International Systems in History

* Syllabus updated on 22 September 2023. A detaild version will be uploaded on ITC-LMS. All announcements will be made there, so make sure to check it regularly.

This course introduces students to two recent notable developments in the field of international relations: non-Western (or global) IR and historical IR. The former criticizes Eurocentrism in conventional IR and calls for more attention on the non-Western world, while the latter finds problems with over-dependence on modern (especially post-WWII) cases and aims to broaden the temporal scope of IR research by investigating historical cases.

The module first covers major theoretical discussions and then moves on to empirical issues such as: How different was the international system in early modern East Asia from that in Europe? How has the non-West been treated in international society? What kind of alternative conceptualization can we reach in order to mitigate bias in the field?

This module aims to give students the tools to understand the origins of the international order we live in and how we can study international relations with less geographical and temporal bias. It also aims to help them develop the ability to critically analyze political issues and think outside the box in explaining their causes.

履修上の注意
Background in international relations in addition to a good level of spoken and written English is desirable. While the former is more of a requirement because of the nature of the course, I encourage students who are not (yet) very confident in their English proficiency to take the course and use it as an opportunity to improve their skills.
