Animal Law
Animal Law
This seminar will discuss important issues concerning animal law. Key topics to be covered are: (1) concepts of "animal" (religious, cultural, and legal); (2) animal rights and welfare; (3) animal colonization and global environment; (4) solutions of animal-related disputes; and (5) the future of animal law.
The seminar will mainly focus on Japan and the USA, but will also include laws of other countries and international law. Animals to be discussed include: companion animals, factory animals, wild animals, animals used for scientific experimentation and for entertainment, and others.
Seminar participation, presentation, and a final essay about one of the issues of animal law will be required. Seminar readings will cover a wide-range of material, such as scholarly works, constitutional and statutory laws, administrative regulations, court cases, and so forth.

授業の方法
Each seminar consists of a participant presentation and a following discussion.
Presentation element:
One of the participants delivers a 20-minute presentation, critically introducing the required reading(s) at the beginning of a seminar.
Discussion element:
Questions regarding the content of either the presentation or readings can be freely raised. A comparative perspective in discussions would be highly evaluated.
成績評価方法
・Seminar preparation (30%)
・Seminar participation (30%)
・A final essay relating to animal law (40%)
NOTE: The evaluation of the final essay (3,000-words in English) would consider the thematic significance and the professionalism of the writing.
