エコロジカル・アクティブ・ラーニング:適応的・自己主導的学習を捉える発達的視点

Ecological Active Learning: A developmental perspective on adaptive, self-directed learning
How do young children learn so much about the world, so quickly? A rich body of research has demonstrated that that active engagement with the world is a crucial component of learning: As soon as they can sit or walk, infants spontaneously grab and manipulate objects and approach or avoid people. As language develops, young children ask about the meaning of words, request the labels of objects, and inquire about the many new and puzzling phenomena they encounter. Active learning has been a topic of interest for philosophers, psychologists, cognitive and computer scientists.

What is active learning? Are children efficient active learners? Is there a developmental trajectory for active learning? Is active learning better than more passive forms of instruction? This seminar examines these questions across domains such as visual attention, physical reasoning, causal learning, and problem solving. Readings will also address issues in explanation, exploration, and related topics. The seminar includes a mix of lectures, discussions and group activities.

During the 3rd period, Professor Azzurra Ruggeri will introduce recent research findings and cutting-edge developments in the field. During the 4th period, Yuri Uesaka will serve as facilitator, and together with Professor Ruggeri, will lead discussions on related research topics as well as on participants’ own research projects. In addition,Professor Ruggeri will share her experiences and perspectives on pursuing a career in academia.
授業の方法
The first half of the class (Friday, 3rd period) will primarily take the form of lectures by Professor Azzurra Ruggeri. However, as the sessions will be conducted in an interactive manner, active participation is strongly encouraged. The second half (Friday, 4th period) will be conducted in a more group-based discussion format. Students will take part in existing active learning studies and reflect, first with a group and then in plenary, on what the studies were about: their research questions, hypotheses, and expected patterns of results.
成績評価方法
Evaluation will be based on class participation and on the group-based presentations given during the second half of the Friday 3rd-period sessions.
