格差・不平等研究のための社会的埋め込み論

Social Networks, Institution, and Organisation
格差・不平等は社会科学研究の主要なトピックの1つである。この授業では，なぜ格差・不平等が生じ，維持されるのかを理論的，概念的に説明する枠組みの1つとして，「埋め込み」に着目する。この概念は元々経済行為を対象としていたが，教育など社会科学の広い領域にも応用可能である。一方，「埋め込み」が 'umbrella concept' とも呼ばれるように，その意味するところが研究者により多様であることから混乱が生じることもある。この授業の第1の目標は，「埋め込み」に関する必読文献の輪読を通じてこの概念の理解を深めることである。また，この枠組を自身の研究に応用する可能性や，（埋め込み論とは異なる）自身の研究枠組みとの差異について説明できるようになることも，この授業のねらいである。
Inequality is one of the leading topics in social science research. This course pays attention to 'embeddedness,' which theoretically and conceptually explains why inequality emerges and persists. This concept has initially targeted economic actions but can apply to the broader field in social sciences such as education. In the meantime, as 'embeddedness' is called the 'umbrella concept,' we sometimes have confusion due to various meanings among scholars. Therefore, we primarily aim to get a deeper understanding of this concept by reading must-read literature about 'embeddedness.' Also, this course intends that participants get to explain how to apply to their research or how different they are from the 'embeddedness' concept.

授業計画
以下の大まかなスケジュールに沿って文献の輪読と議論を進める。参加者が文献の内容を解説するが，担当はイントロダクションの回で割り振る予定である。授業の進行や受講者の関心に応じ，文献を変更する可能性がある。
This class will follow the rough schedule below by reading the designated articles and discussing them. Participants are to introduce the literature contents assigned to them at the introduction session. We might change the literature to read as the class progresses and participants' interest.
（1）イントロダクション Introduction
授業の目的と概要を講師が説明し，文献の割り振りを決める。
The instructor will explain the purpose and overview of this class, and participants will select the literature to be assigned.
（2）「埋め込み」概念とそれに関連する枠組み The ‘embeddedness’ concept and relevant frameworks
Mark Granovetterによる Society and Economyを読む。社会ネットワークが信頼、権力などの創出を通じて個々人の行為にどのように影響してゆくのかについて議論する。
In this part, we are going to read "Society and Economy: Framework and Principles," written by Mark Granovetter. Through this book, we will discuss how social networks affect individuals’ actions by creating social trust, power, etc.
（3）組織フィールド Organisational Fields
格差・不平等を生み出す制度的文脈を説明する際、社会学的制度理論では「組織フィールド」に着目する。このパートでは、Neil FligsteinとDouglas McAdamによる A Theory of Fields を読む。組織フィールド、およびそのなかでの行為者の振る舞いがいかにして一定の社会秩序（ひいては社会的不平等）を生み出すのかについて議論する。
In explaining institutional contexts generating social inequalities, the sociological institutional theory focuses on ‘Organisational Fields.’ In this respect, we will read "A Theory of Fields" by Neil Fligstein and Douglas McAdam in this part. Through this book, we are going to discuss how the organisational fields and actions which the actors take in the fields generate a certain social order, which can result in social inequalities.
（4）不平等の源泉としての組織 Organisations as Sources of Inequalities
このパートでは、組織内部における社会関係が生み出す不平等を扱う。この論点について議論するため、Donald Tomaskovic-DeveyとDustin Avent-holtによる Relational Inequalities: An Organizational Approach を読む。
In this part, we focus on social inequalities generated by social relations within organisations. To discuss this issue, we will read “Relational Inequalities: An Organizational Approach,” written by Donald Tomaskovic-Devey and Dustin Avent-holt.
授業の方法
割り当てられた文献（章）の内容を参加者が紹介し，全員で議論する。必要に応じ，講師が関連する内容を解説する。授業言語は日本語を用いるが，部分的に英語を用いても構わない。
The participants will introduce the contents of the assigned literature and discuss them together. The instructor will explain related matters as necessary. We will speak in Japanese in this class, but participants may speak in English partially if necessary.
成績評価方法
関心のあるトピックについて，埋め込みアプローチを関連付けて論じたタームペーパーの内容。埋め込み概念に批判的な内容でも構わない。また，プレゼンテーションの内容も加味する。
The term papers the participants wrote about the topic of interest concerning the embeddedness approach. It is possible to be critical toward the embeddedness concept. Also, the instructor will consider each presentation into account.
