DIY Do It Yourself for Online Social Research

This class aims to help students learn the methodology of social survey design and implementation through lectures and workshops. The lectures and workshops include defining the purpose of the survey, constructing hypotheses corresponding to the purpose and question, defining the target population and planned sample, sampling procedures, constructing questionnaires, managing survey implementation, organising dataset (coding free texts and data cleaning), creating a codebook, preliminary analyses. Based on the techniques above, we are also going to conduct a small-scale survey with an online survey platform (LimeSurvey). Through the whole program, the students participating in this class are expected to be able to design and conduct social surveys, including cutting-edge techniques, by themselves.

#01 What does social research mean? We discuss a general understanding of the purpose of social research, and students will grasp the whole image of how social research proceeds. #02 Constructing the purpose of the survey, research questions, and hypotheses We discuss how to describe “Why is that survey necessary?” persuasively with existing metadata as examples. Then, students will understand more about how to construct research questions and hypotheses that are suitable for quantitative social research. #03 Desining sample Students will learn about important concepts relevant to the sample design. #04 Sampling procedures Students will learn several types of sampling procedures and understand their pros and cons. Then, in particular, they will discuss how to implement random sampling or probability proportional sampling methods. #05 Modes of social survey We will discuss the types of survey mode and their pros and cons. #06 Designing questionnaire (1) Students will learn the types of measurements and how to create the question wordings and choices/alternatives corresponding to the measurements. Furthermore, they will understand the layout and structure of the questionnaire and what we should care about in designing the questionnaire. #07 Designing questionnaire (2) It has recently become easier for researchers to design online questionnaires with survey platforms. In this session, we will practice creating general survey questions and random assignment techniques, which are necessary for survey experiments, through the actual manipulation of the platform. #08 Excercising questionnaire design Based on the questionnaire design techniques, students will present the survey items they create with LimeSurvey in line with their research interests. #09 Documentation for survey implementation The questionnaire is not only necessary for doing social research. In this session, students will understand other important documents. #10 Editing and coding Students will learn about the procedure of checking and editing completed questionnaires. Then, they familiarise themselves with the framework and process of coding free-text answers. #11 Data cleaning We should verify that there are no serious inconsistencies between answers. In this session, we will discuss the procedure of data cleaning and measures after finding defined errors. #12 How to deal with non-response Non-response consists of the unit non-response and item non-response, and the former is a more serious problem in designing and conducting social research. Students will understand the general mechanisms of non-response and discuss correcting biases due to the unit non-response. #13 Descriptive analysis of the dataset and creating a codebook Students will learn to tally and analyse the dataset obtained through the survey and to create a codebook so that the third person can use the dataset adequately.
We have each session based on the class material distributed through UTOL or Google Classroom. Because we use LimeSurvey, an online survey platform, in some sessions, it is more convenient for each student to bring their laptops (but not mandatory).
Student evaluation is based on course assignments for each session (20%), the quality of presentation (20%), and the term paper (60%).
It is desirable to have learned social research methodology at the undergraduate level.
