ラテン語史料講読演習（２）

　紀元６世紀の東ローマ皇帝ユスティニアヌスの治世期に作られたコリップスの詩『ヨハンニスIohannis』のラテン語テキストを輪読する。この作品は、ヴァンダル王国征服直後の北アフリカで活躍した将軍ヨハンネスを称えるために作られた叙事詩で、全９歌から成る。ウェルギリウスの叙事詩など古典作品の技法を利用しながらも、伝説ではなく、目の前の実在する人物を称えていること、古典作品を模範としながらもキリスト教帝国下で作られていることなど、本作品は現存する韻文作品としては貴重な性格を多く有しており、単なる歴史史料としてだけではなく、文学的な価値にも目絵を配りながら、原文を味わっていきたい。
　読解を通じて古典ラテン語韻文に関する基礎的な知識を獲得するとともに、ローマ帝政後期の歴史状況や政治言説、社会の風習やキリスト教社会の特徴を探ることを目指す。また、一次史料や二次文献を利用する上での作法についても適宜指導する。
　なお、授業では、ラテン語の精読に重きを置く。履修学生の理解度に応じて文法事項の確認も適宜行いながら進めていくことで、ラテン語の基礎的読解力を高めることも目指す。
The main objective of the seminar is to enable students to develop the basic ability to use historical sources for the classical and Byzantine studies. In this seminar, Iohannis, composed by the poet Corippus under the reign of the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian (527-565), will be read. Iohannis was made as a panegyric for a Roman military commander John Troglita, who had successfully suppressed the revolts of African people just after the reconquest of Vandal kingdom. This poem is a rare example of a heroic epic that has been handed down to us from the later imperial period. While it is full of historical information on Justinian's campaign in North Africa, this epic gives us a precious insight into classical tradition of Latin literature and its adaptation to the Christian empire.
Reading the original text attentively will deepen the knowledge on the ancient world and help students to acquire practical skills of using historical sources. Some command of Latin reading is necessary for the participation in class. It is recommended to have some knowledge on the grammar of Latin.
