British Literature 8
This course will cover the reading of and discussions about the novel Barnaby Rudge by Charles Dickens, considering elements such as character, narrative, and context. Particular attention will be paid to historical tensions represented through the Gordon Riots and the subsequent fallout, as well as Victorian ideas of law, order, right, and wrong in a literary sense.
Students who undertake this course will not only read the entirety of an important but often overlooked novel by Dickens, but also be able to explore different critical approaches and perspectives. By reading an entire novel rather than short stories or excerpts, students will gain a deeper understanding of the coherence of the text as a whole. Students will have the opportunity to present and lead a class as well.
