British Literature 7

This course will cover a range of topics related to the development of literary criticism, and will include both short introductory lectures and in-class discussions of readings. Depending on the number of students, there will be possible opportunities for presentations and group work.
The focus of this course is literary criticism that is fundamentally rooted in ideology, in opposition to the stated goals of schools such as Formalism and New Criticism, which dominated much of the early twentieth century. The main areas considered are Marxism, Feminist Theory, Queer Theory, Post-Colonialism, and a brief foray into Zoocriticism, part of the Post-Humanist turn.
