日本仏教戒律文献講読(1)

Karma, the "Essence of the Precepts" (戒体) and avijñapti-rūpa in East Asia
This is the first of a two-semester series focusing on writings related to the idea of Karma, the "Essence of the Precepts" (戒体) and avijñapti-rūpa as they were understood in China and Japan. Although these three ideas are not often discussed in introductory works on Buddhism, some would argue they form the central philosophical theory that explains Buddhist "identity" and and what it meant to have the precepts and to act as a monk or nun.

This course will focus on two main works. In the spring semester, we will read the _Biao wubiao se zhang_ 表無表色章 the "Essay on manifest and unmanifest form" by the Tang-dynasty scholar Ji 基 (632--682; sometimes known as Kuiji 窺基), which will be read with the help of several commentaries on this work written in Japan.

授業計画
Week 1: Introduction and Overview This session we will go over course policies, discuss how we will proceed based on the interests and needs of the students, and discuss some of the major themes of the course. Week 2: Conceptual overview This class we will focus on some of the major ideas from the course, based on Greene's (2016) “Seeing Avijñapti-rūpa – Buddhist Doctrine and Meditative Experience in India and China,” Tsuchihashi's (1971) “Kaitai ni tsuite 戒体について,” and Ishida's (1965) “Nichiren shoki no kaikan ni tsuite 日蓮初期の戒觀について [The Precept-doctrine of Nichiren in his Early Period].” Weeks 3-12: Close reading of the _Biao wubiao se zhang_ 表無表色章 These weeks will focus on reading selections from the _Biao wubiao se zhang_, based on the edition from the _Taishō shinshū daizō kyō_ 大正新脩大蔵経, alongside commentaries written by Chinese and Japanese scholars found in the _Zoku zō kyō_ 続蔵経 and the _Nihon Daizō kyo_ 日本大蔵経. Week 13: Conclusions, and Student presentations This week will give students and the instructor an opportunity to reflect on what we have read, and also to present their individual final projects
授業の方法
This course will mainly be based on close readings of primary sources written in classical Chinese (kanbun 漢文). Preparation will include creating annotated translations into English before each class session and presenting these translations in class with commentary.
成績評価方法
Grading will be based on attendance, participation, and preparation for class, as well as a final major assignment. Students are expected to attend all class sessions. In cases of illness, emergency or other personal circumstances, please notify the instructor before the class begins. In some circumstances, the instructor may ask for additional work to make up for any missed class session. "Participation and preparation" mean that it is expected that students come having read the required material and prepared translations for the relevant sections. Details on how this will proceed will vary depending on the reading, and will be discussed in class. The final assignment will consist of a writing project related to the course, and relevant to the individual needs of the students enrolled in the course. This may be either an annotated translation of a section of a text that was dealt with during the course, or another related work, or possibly an academic essay or report on a topic related to the course or East Asian religion or history. Details will be given during the course.
履修上の注意
Some experience studying Buddhism or Classical Chinese (Kanbun 漢文) is expected, however guidance on these topics will be given during class as necessary.
