Various approaches to the study of Japanese medieval and early modern history

In this course, we will explore topics including Western scholarly approaches to gender, economic history, use of primary historical sources, and periodization. Goals include (1) developing the ability to think critically about the ways that historians make assumptions and build arguments, (2) understanding how Western scholars have approached women’s and gender history, and (3) looking comparatively at Japan’s economic institutions in the medieval and early modern eras.
