アカデミック・ライティング(上級)
This course will help graduate students to assess and consolidate their academic writing skills prior to a detailed review of essential techniques for organizing material for postgraduate papers and dissertations. A thorough examination of the below areas is intended to ensure advanced ability and a greater academic professionalism. Improvement is intended in the essential areas of achieving grammatical accuracy, syntax, paragraphing, punctuation, and the opening, extension, and conclusion of academic papers, prior to a central focus on methods for delivering argument in postgraduate dissertations. Emphasis will also be placed on the application of new vocabulary and rhetorical forms of particular relevance to scholarly debate. The course will feature discussion of numerous professional texts, ranging from academic writing in the humanities to scientific prose. Technical improvement will be achieved through class exercises, several essay assignments, and attendance at all classes, all of which are mandatory.

The course schedule will be announced during the class.
授業の方法
The course will include explanation and practice in the following areas: gaining and properly employing complex academic vocabulary; techniques for the recognition of errors of spelling, syntax and punctuation; academic and non-academic prose forms (journalism/review articles/news and current affairs); strong and weak academic writing; common academic writing errors and their eradication, in particular forms of academic redundancy and repetition; techniques for including academic detail; delivering macro- and micro-arguments; adjectival phrasing; methods of quotation; dissertation planning and structure; citation; footnotes; bibliography.
成績評価方法
Student evaluation is dependent on the submission of an end of semester 1000-1200 word paper demonstrating familiarity with the specific areas covered.
