文化遺産・博物館をめぐる諸問題

Issues in heritage and museum studies
This seminar critically examines the concept, scope and history of 'heritage' and 'museums'. Identifying key trends in heritage/museum studies, it explores the critical question as to why the modern world -- or 'we' -- engage(s) in frantic attempts to identify, classify, preserve and interpret our 'heritage' and protect and valorise it by means of museum institutions.

The seminar is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Each student is required to make at least one presentation in class on a topic of her/his interest relating to heritage and museums. The presentation is followed by discussion to which all students are expected to contribute purposefully.

In addition to classroom learning, two field trips to Ueno Park are organised with the aim of critically analysing its historical environment and the Tokyo National Museum from the perspective of heritage/museum studies.
