連合国による占領期（1945-1952）は、日本社会における宗教の位置づけを再定義する形成期であった。連合国軍最高司令官総司令部（SCAP）による「神道指令」（1945年12月15日）は国家神道を廃止し、あらゆる形態の組織宗教に影響を与える多くの改革を導入した。SCAPの宗教課が政策決定において最も強力な役割を果たしたことは明らかだが、日本の官僚（宗務課、福田繁）、学者（宮地直一、岸本英夫）、宗教指導者などの日本側アクターは、外国人スタッフが日本宗教をいかに理解するかに大きな方向づけを与え、宗教法人法の施行と実施に関与し、政教分離を厳密に解釈していたのであった。
この講義では、神道界における戦後の反応、宗教的ナショナリズムの再来、公共圏における宗教の居場所を回復するための努力などを理解し説明するのに役立つ世俗化の社会学的理論（カサノヴァ、デメラート）に照らして、外国人占領軍とその政策について考察する。また、戦後の信教の自由と政教分離をめぐる議論の一部を検証することで、日本的価値と宗教の戦前の理解を回復し憲法改正を主張するような政治家や宗教指導者と、占領下で実施され戦後憲法（1947）の20条と89条に謳われた枠組みや政策を受け入れる人々との対立を明らかにする。特に、これらの公共的議論における宗教的少数派にとって、何が問題であるかに注目する。
The Allied Occupation of Japan (1945-1952) was a formative period that redefined the place of religion in Japanese society. The “Shinto Directive” (15 December 1945), issued by the Supreme Commander of Allied Powers (SCAP), disestablished State Shinto and introduced a number of reforms that impacted all forms of organized religion. SCAP’s Religions Division was clearly the most powerful player in determining policy, but Japanese actors—government bureaucrats (Shūmuka, Fukuda Shigeru), scholars (Miyaji Naokazu, Kishimoto Hideo), and religious leaders—significantly shaped how the foreign staff came to understand Japanese religions, and were involved in the implementation and enforcement of the new laws regulating religion and the strict interpretation of religion-state separation.
This course will consider the foreign Occupation and its policies in light of the sociological theories of secularization (Cassanova, Demerath), which help us understand and explain some of the postwar responses in the Shinto world, the reappearance of religious nationalism, and the efforts to recover a place for religion in the public sphere. The course will also examine some postwar debates surrounding religious freedom and religion-state separation, which reveal the conflict between political and religious leaders who seek to restore the prewar understanding of Japanese values and religion, and advocate for constitutional revision, and those who have embraced the framework and policies implemented during the Occupation and enshrined in Articles 20 and 89 of the postwar Constitution (1947). Particular attention will be given to what is at stake for religious minorities in these public debates.

この授業は基本的に対面での講義を行うが、感染症の流行状況によっては、オンラインへと切り替える（全学及び学部の方針に従う）。その際に使用するZoomのリンクについてはITC-LMSに記載しておくが、通常の授業のオンライン配信は原則行わないので注意すること。したがって、最終的に履修する／しないにかかわらず、履修予定の者は予めUTASから履修登録（仮登録）し、ITC-LMSが使える状態にしておくこと。
