Developmental Genetics
The objectives of this course are: (1) to understand fundamental phenomena and molecular mechanisms underlying animal development; (2) to learn genetic research approaches using model organisms; and (3) to outline genetic analyses of molecular functions at the whole-organism level. These topics are closely connected to the medical field.
In this lecture series, the developmental processes that generate the body plan of multicellular organisms will be introduced. Multicellular organisms are not merely collections of cells; rather, individual cells differentiate and form tissues through dynamic interactions with one another. By studying how cellular phenomena—such as cell division, differentiation, cell death, and migration—are coordinated within a multicellular system, students will gain an understanding of how a living organism emerges as an integrated individual. In addition, students will learn genetic approaches for analyzing molecular functions at the organismal level and will understand how these approaches differ from analyses performed at the cellular level.
