Cartoon Storytelling

Steven Fischer's Wonderful, Happy, Cartoony Class
This course is for anyone who has an interest in expressing themselves through cartoons and those interested in cartoons as an art form. You will realize your potential of becoming a cartoonist no matter your skill level. This course introduces students to the possibilities cartooning offers as a vehicle to express and communicate effectively. This is a project-based course. Our objective is to create an original story with original characters. Each student creates their own story prompted by a real life experience. We will look at narrative structure, character development, creativity, and drawing with the intent of using cartoon art as personal expression - using real life experiences and personal conflict as prompts for new work.

This class is also a basic introduction to the nature of creativity, how we position self to generate ideas for an original story with original characters using personal experience or observation as prompt. You will learn what makes a good story, how to construct a new narrative, how to develop believable characters, and the basic cartoon drawing techniques.

履修上の注意
While participants will be creating many cartoons during the course (in comic book, comic strip, single panel, and storyboard formats), the final project – and goal of this course – is for each student to produce a completed cartoon story in comic book form that demonstrates the student’s ability to understand character development, narrative structure, and storytelling.  These final projects will be collected into a keepsake PDF for you to use as part of your portfolio.
