Cartoon Storytelling

Steven Fischer's Wonderful, Happy, Cartoony Course
This course is for anyone who has an interest in expressing themselves through cartoons and those interested in cartoons as an art form. This class is about realizing the potential of becoming a cartoonist no matter your skill level. This course is intended to introduce students to the possibilities cartooning offers as a vehicle to express and communicate effectively. Students should realize that while commercial cartooning may require certain skills and abilities, the only limitation in the art of cartoon storytelling are those self-imposed. Anyone willing to express him or herself honestly can create a legitimate comic. Our objective is to create and complete an original story with original characters.
Participants will use cartooning to make a deep connection with self in ways that lead us to create original stories with purpose and impact. This experience helps a participant more clearly understand ourself and the world around us.

履修上の注意
While participants will be creating many cartoons during the course (in comic book, comic strip, single panel, and storyboard formats), the final project – and goal of this course – is for each student to produce a completed cartoon story in comic book form that demonstrates the student’s ability to understand character development, narrative structure, and storytelling.  These final projects will be collected into a keepsake PDF for you to use as part of your portfolio. Your final project cartoon should be produced in English. This will help participants to strengthen their understanding of the language. Please note: We intend for this course to be held in-person and the instructor will be traveling to Japan from North America specifically for this course. Therefore, if something happens that prevents the instructor from traveling to Japan, this course will need to move to online.
