Sound Sense: Reevaluating our relationship with music

How often do you come into contact with music? Is it intentional or by chance? What do you know about the music you are listening to? Do you realise that much of the music existing in the world will only ever be heard by a small number of people? How has technology influenced our music consumption? When does sound become music? This course looks at music and its role as a form of social technology, with processes linked closely to our physiology and everyday methods of intercommunication. It will give you the simple tools by which to assess and analyse music pragmatically, informing your own future personal encounters with music, and bringing insights to how we relate to each other by involvement in musical activity. At the same time it will push the boundaries of musical experiences showing how they can become a bridge to other areas of practice. "No musical expertise or technical ability is needed for this course." Drawing on a wide range of musical experiences, and embracing a diverse selection of performance practices, cultural settings, and contrasting genres, we will develop a practicall methodology for exploring the richness of the world of music with which we are embraced.
