New Liberal Arts through Global Asian Studies
This course is an omnibus lecture series taught by faculty members of the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia (IASA), the University of Tokyo. It is jointly organized by two initiatives at the Institute: Global Asian Studies (GAS) and the East Asian Academy for New Liberal Arts (EAA). The Institute comprises the division of Pan-Asian Studies, East Asian Studies(i)(ii), South Asian Studies, West Asian Studies, Pioneering Asian Studies, and the International Academic Strategy Unit. Faculty members from these departments will introduce the latest developments and frontiers in their respective fields of research.
Global Asian Studies seeks to reimagine Asian Studies through an "inside-out" perspective—one that approaches Asia as a source of knowledge rather than merely an object of study. It promotes interdisciplinary inquiry into contemporary global challenges, including development, the environment, health, and concern for inequality within Asia and beyond, while emphasizing Asia's agency in shaping scholarly agendas.
The East Asian Academy for New Liberal Arts (EAA), by contrast, aims to rethink the humanities from a broader perspective that transcends East Asia as a fixed geographical category. It emphasizes the interactions between East Asia and other parts of Asia, as well as Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. Guided by the vision of "East Asian Studies as Liberal Arts," EAA seeks to cultivate a community of learning in the spirit of the traditional shuyuan (academy), where faculty members and students engage in collaborative dialogue and critical reflection.
Beginning with the fundamental question, "What is Asia?", this course explores new possibilities for Asian Studies in a global context. Through lectures by leading scholars from across the Institute, students will encounter diverse perspectives spanning the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. By examining cutting-edge research from multiple disciplines, the course presents Asian Studies not simply as an area of regional specialization but as a new form of liberal arts that offers fresh ways of understanding Asia and its place in the world.
