The Mongol Empire and Japan
This seminar explores East Asia in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries through closely reading academic texts on the history of the Mongol Empire and Japan, including recently published _The Mongol World_ (2022) and _The Cambridge History of the Mongol Empire_ (2023).

Class schedule and readings are subject to change. 1. Introduction: the world in the thirteenth century, how to approach the readings 2. "The Rise of Chinggis Khan and the United Empire, 1206–1260" (Cambridge History (CH) Ch. 1, reading and discussion) 3. 授業の方法
Class sessions will mainly consist of discussions and presentations based on assigned readings. Students will be required to give presentations based on the assigned reading. The number and format of the presentations will depend on the class size. Towards the end of the semester, students will work on an essay project.
成績評価方法
Contribution to class discussion and class activities: 30% Presentations: 35% Term paper: 35%
履修上の注意
Students are not expected to have prior knowledge of Japanese history and Japanese culture. Students are expected to read the assigned readings thoroughly before class and actively participate in class discussions. They also review class materials and engage in further readings for the essay project.
