The Story of Kimono: Fashion and Tradition
This seminar explores the history of kimono with a particular focus on its development in the Edo period. Through reading scholarly texts and analyzing visual and textual sources, students will study the history of kimono and examine how clothing and fashion illustrate societal, economic, and cultural characteristics of the time.

授業計画
Class schedule and readings are subject to change. 1. Introduction: What do we know about kimono? What do we know about fashion? 2. The origin of kimono 3. Fibers: hemp, silk, and cotton 4. Textile traditions: spinning, dyeing, and weaving 5. Flourishing kimono culture in the Edo period 6. Exploring Edo kimono designs 7. Development of Edo fashion media 8. Buying and sewing kimono 9. Second-hand kimono trade and boro 10. Transformation of kimono in the late 19th century 11. Modern kimono, national identity, and gender 12. Kimono in fashion and tradition 13. Summary of the course
授業の方法
Class sessions will mainly consist of discussions and presentations based on assigned readings. Students will be required to give short presentations about the reading, a particular item (kimono or image of kimono), or a particular topic related to the history of kimono (technology, event, person, etc.). The number and format of the presentations will depend on the class size. Towards the end of the semester, students will work on an essay project.

履修上の注意
While students are not expected to have prior knowledge of Japanese history and Japanese culture, they are required to participate actively in discussions and research. Students are expected to read the assigned readings thoroughly before class. They also review class materials and engage in further readings for the essay project.
