What is an identity? Why is identity politics conditioning political, cultural, intellectual discourses rather than being conditioned in the public sphere? What does it mean to be a Japanese, a woman, a jobless person, etc.? What is the limit of an indentity, if any? This course, consisting of lectures given by professors from different departments and areas, aims at exploring the problematic of identity as well as that of identification. Without precipitating all kinds of social struggles, conflicts, interests-bound arguments explicitly or implicited based upon a certain phantasmatic "identity," what we need at any moment should be a careful, methodic, even pedantic, examination of the socio-historico-intellecutal conditions of current discourses of identity.
