グローバル教養実践演習(2)

歩く・観る・考えるー東京の環境課題 Walking, Seeing, and Thinking About Environmental Challenges in Tokyo
This course offers an interdisciplinary and field-based exploration of environmental challenges in metropolitan Tokyo. Moving beyond purely technical approaches to urban design, it examines how urban space is historically produced, socio-politically contested, and continuously reshaped. Through classroom discussions, critical readings, and site-based investigations, students analyze how urban form, infrastructure, governance, community, and everyday practices shape human–environment relations, sustainability, and disaster risk. Particular attention is given to the applicability and transferability of socio-environmental and sustainability concepts and theories across different historical and geographical contexts. Emphasizing experiential learning, students will walk, observe, and interpret selected sites in Tokyo; collect data through interviews and mapping; and collaboratively design and conduct a research project. The course provides a unique opportunity to connect theory with practice while strengthening skills in research design, academic writing, and oral presentation in English.

By successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Explain and contextualize the diversity and complexity of the Tokyo metropolitan area in terms of its natural and built environments, human-environment relations, historically formed socio-economic and political structures, and cultural practices.
- Critically assess key concepts and theories of human-environment relations and sustainability, and evaluate their transferability across different historical and geographical contexts
- Systematically observe and interpret urban landscapes using appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- Design and conduct an independent, manageable research project addressing a socio-environmental issue in Tokyo.
- Present their research findings clearly and persuasively in English, both orally and in writing

授業の方法
This course combines seminars, guided discussions, and field-based learning. Class sessions introduce key theoretical frameworks and debates through short lectures and discussion of assigned readings, with an emphasis on active student participation. Fieldwork is central to the course. Through guided urban exploration in the city, students learn to systematically observe, critically interpret, and analytically engage with urban environmental issues and challenges. Students work individually and in small groups to design and conduct a research project, receiving structured feedback on research design, analysis, and presentation. The course emphasizes experiential learning and the integration of theory with empirical investigation.
