Critical Issues in Science, Technology, and Society
This course addresses the complex interactions of scientific knowledge, technological systems and the social world from social sciences perspectives. It explores in particular the impacts and control of science and technology, with focus on the risks, benefits and opportunities that S&T may pose to peace, security, community, democracy, environmental sustainability, and human values. Working with case studies, students examine recent developments in the regulation of science and technology (first part) as well as the incorporation of science into policymaking and regulatory processes (second part). In so doing, they discuss various issues of concern and address questions such as: how should states set priorities for research funding; who should participate, and how, in technological decision-making; should life forms be patented; how should societies measure risks and set safety standards; how should experts communicate the reasons for their judgments to the public?

授業計画
WEEK 1 - Introductory lecture and guidance: basic notions, terminology, course plan, learning methods, readings and other sources’ overview. WEEK 2 - A field of its own: The emergence of Science and Technology Studies (Interactive lecture and group/classroom discussions based on pre-assigned readings) WEEKS 3 to 6 - The challenges and opportunities of regulating science and emerging technologies (Interactive lectures + group/classroom discussions based on pre-assigned readings + short oral presentations based-upon case studies) W3 - Why and how does the regulation of scientific research and emerging technologies occur? Comparative approaches W4/5/6 - Case studies (related to genetic engineering, geoengineering, nanotechnology, cyberspace technology and blockchain technology) WEEKS 7 to 11 - The challenges and opportunities of incorporating science into policymaking and regulatory processes (Interactive lectures + group/classroom discussions based on pre-assigned readings + short oral presentations based-upon case studies) W7/8 - Navigating the science-policy interface W9/10/11 - Case studies (focusing on the role played by science in courts, government agencies, and new boundary organizations in the fields of climate change and biological diversity) WEEKS 12/13 – Preparation and final presentation of a team-based mini-project/role-play simulation
授業の方法
Classes consist of short interactive lectures, followed by both group and classroom discussions addressing core STS concepts and/or focusing on case studies. These discussions are generally based on pre-assigned readings and build on a list of questions proposed in advance. Students will also prepare and present a joint mini-project/role-play simulation.
成績評価方法
* Active participation to group and classroom discussions + short oral presentations : 30%. * Individual write-ups (submission of a total of three 500-word write-ups) : 30%. * Mini-project/role-play simulation, consisting of both a final joint presentation and a final individual report (about 1000 words) : 40%.

Will not use texbook. Most reading materials will be made available in class.

履修上の注意
No prior study of law and science-policy interfaces is required, but a strong interest and a serious commitment to learning about contemporary challenges and issues from an interdisciplinary perspective is crucial. This class is conducted in the active learning style, and constructive participation by students is highly encouraged.
