Materials Chemistry I
Materials chemistry I will focus on understanding the relationship between structures and properties of organic molecules. This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to Organic Chemistry (Prof. Nakamura), which serves as an essential foundation for understanding materials chemistry. Materials Chemistry II will cover Inorganic Chemistry, which will be taught by Professor Uchida.

Planned Schedule: Week 1 (April 6th): Alkanes, aromatic rings, nomenclature, structure, orbitals and bonding [ONLINE] Week 2 (April 20th): Alkenes and alkynes Week 3 (April 27th): Stereochemistry Week 4* (May 11th): Rings and substituted alkanes Week 5 (May 18th): Substitution reactions Week 6 (May 25th): Elimination reactions Week 7* (June 1st): Addition reactions (electrophilic additions to alkenes) Week 8 (June 8th): Additions to pi-bonds Week 9 (June 15th): Dienes and the allyl system Week 10* (June 22nd): Aromaticity Week 11 (June 29th): Substitution reactions of aromatic compounds Week 12 (July 6th): Carbonyl chemistry (addition reactions) Week 13* (July 13th): Research topics in Organic Chemistry Final Examination (Date: TBA) Class with *’s will be the scheduled quiz day (actual schedule may vary).
授業の方法
[This course may be offered either in online/face-to-face hybrid or entirely online, depending on the situation of COVID-19. Details will be discussed in the first online class on Zoom (refer to the URL of the Zoom meeting below.)] (1) Course materials will be uploaded on ITC-LMS. (2) Assignments will be uploaded on ITC-LMS. Quizzes and final examination will be done face-to-face (details will be provided in class). (3) Office hours will be provided online through Zoom, in addition to the regular lectures.
成績評価方法
Assignments: 30% Short quiz: 30% Final examination: 40% [Gradings may vary depending on the situation of COVID-19. Details will be announced in the class.]
