Issues for urban disaster mitigation and management will be discussed through comparison among the experiences and lessons learned from recent natural hazards that hit urban areas. Outlines of damages due to these hazards, discussion on the keywords, selection of theme/topics, how to investigate/survey/collect information and materials, how to compile the research results are introduced and instructed in the first few classes. After these classes of instruction, each student has to make a presentation on his/her own topic. Based on the presentation, free discussion on the topic and related issues is carried out. During the semester, all the students will be invited to visit the Disaster Mitigation Training Center to have a disaster drill and experience the disaster situation.
Followings are the potential topics that the students will tackle and make a presentation
Probable damage in Tokyo due to future earthquakes,
Regional characteristics of the damaged areas and proper recovery,
Structural damage/reconstruction/ retrofit,
Human casualties and life after the hazard (including disaster preparedness and recovery of life),
Risk management and disaster information system,
