環境熱力学

Thermodynamics in natural systems
Thermodynamics provides the framework for understanding multi-scale phenomena, from microscopic heat transfer to the macroscopic processes governing the Earth’s "spheres". Unlike idealized classical models, natural systems are largely open and far from equilibrium, yet they remain bound by the fundamental laws of energy and entropy. By treating ecosystems and climate as dissipative structures, thermodynamics transforms descriptive biology into a predictive, quantitative science focused on how systems maintain complexity through energy consumption.

授業計画
Part I  (The Foundations)
 1. Thermodynamic system (multivariate states, diagram, thermal equilibrium) 2. Thermodynamic laws (energy, temperature, heat, work, entropy, thermodynamic processes) 3. Thermodynamic cycle (heat engine, Carnot cycle, efficiency) 4. Heat engines and free energy (Joule-Thomson effect, Stirling engine) 5. Statistical mechanics (macroscopic states, microscopic states) 6. Kinetics and dynamics (relaxation, activation) Part II (Natural systems)
 7. Exergy (Environmental impact measure) 8. Global heat engine (Atmospheric circulation, oceanic circulation) 9. Thermodynamics of aqueous systems and soil chemistry 10. Bioenergetics (Life as a non-equilibrium process) 11. Phase transitions in the atmosphere (Clouds, aerosols, rain) 12. Planetary boundaries and entropy budget (Sustainability)
授業の方法
90-minute lecture. Two sessions per week. May include occasional experimental sessions for demonstrative purposes.
成績評価方法
Homework assignment: 30% (15 % Thermodynamic laws, 15 % Natural systems) Term-end (close-notebook) exam.: 70% Total 100%    (The figures are approximate. The number of homework assignments may vary,)
履修上の注意
1. An enrolling student is expected to spend, on average 10 hours a week during the A Semester, on the studies required, including both the contact and non-contact time. 2. No special math skills are required. They will be supplemented as necessary. 3. Hands-on experience through demo experiments, guided or self-taught. will be a great asset. 4. Feel free to ask any questions, not limited to thermodynamics, you may have.
