PBL Approaches to Contemporary Environmental Issues
This course examines the ways in which today's complex and cross-scale socio-environmental issues are perceived, understood, and addressed by a variety of stakeholders (scientists, policy makers, the business community, technological innovators, thought leaders, citizen action groups) and different collectives (from epistemic communities to science-policy institutional interfaces). Through interactive lectures and classroom discussions, students examine the influence of emergent narratives and associated conceptual frameworks on core questions such as: How are so-called 'contemporary environmental problems' actually defined? Who and what is considered relevant to causing and resolving them? What solutions are favored or discounted, both formally (in law and policy) and informally (in practice)? By working with a range of real-world case studies and preparing two mini-projects, students critically assess the effectiveness of existing science-policy interfaces and further reflect on the crucial importance of issue framing for the development of more effective and inclusive environmental problem solving.

WEEK 1 - Introductory lecture and guidance (Basic notions, terminology, course plan, learning methods, readings and other sources’ overview) WEEKS 2/3 - Global change research, Critical social science and the Anthropocene framing Short interactive lectures + group and classroom discussions based on pre-assigned readings WEEKS 4 to 9 - Problem framing Short interactive lectures focusing on research methodology + group and classroom discussions based on pre-assigned / recommended materials * W4: AN ANTHROPOGENIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS Exploring what beings, forces, and other entities are elemental to our present predicaments / in the Anthropocene. * W5: ENVIRONING MEDIA AND THE ANTHROPOCENE Exploring how environing media (data, charts, and maps) has shaped our understanding of the world. * W6: RE-EARTHING THROUGH COLLECTIVE STUDY Exploring the extent to which a self-reflexive methodology helps unsettle the way we engage with data, making clear how vision and narrative are implicated in information that may initially seem objective. * W7: THE REMOTE SENSATION OF DISINTEGRATION Exploring the extent to which remote sensing and technological lenses with ecological, personal and ancestral perspectives help “counter-map” the colonial and ecological violence of the fossil fuel industry. * W8: WHEN HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE BECAME POSSIBILITY ISLAND Exploring how to attune ourselves to our own physical embodiment as a focal point for responding to the Anthropocene. * W9: THE MONT PELERIN REWRITE Exploring how to reinterpret Article 6 of the Paris Climate Agreement as a complex and contentious operational text outlining rules on how countries can reduce their emissions using international carbon markets. WEEKS 10/11: Mini-project 1: How to create public engagement around responsible stewardship of the planet? Preparation and presentation of a mini-project (teamwork) based on pre-assigned / recommended materials WEEKS 12/13 - Mini-project 2: How to ensure that universities have more impact when addressing global environmental crises? Preparation and presentation of a mini-project (teamwork) based on pre-assigned / recommended materials
授業の方法
Classes typically consist of short interactive lectures, followed by both group and classroom discussions addressing broad concepts and/or focusing on contextualised issues. Classes also include specific learning activities such as case studies and problem-based learning. Sessions 10 to 13 consist of the preparation and presentation of two joint mini-projects.
成績評価方法
※ Contribution to classroom discussions, case-based oral presentations: 35% ※ Group-based preparation and presentation (about 20 min.) of two joint mini-projects : 40% ※ Submission of an individual report (around 1500-1800 words) words) focusing on selected aspects of the mini-projects: 25%

No prior study of environmental studies is required, but a strong interest and a serious commitment to learning about environmental issues from a cross-disciplinary perspective is essential. This class is conducted in the active learning style, and constructive participation by students is highly recommended. Class materials and regular updates are available on Google Classroom.
